SMALL BATCH MIRAMAR

This is where the best of the best come together. For generations, the world's finest naval aviators have trained here, pushing one another to be just a little better than they were the day before. The PGA TOUR is no different. It's where the best of the best compete, where every detail matters, and where the smallest advantages can make the biggest difference.

Small Batch Miramar was designed alongside Maverick McNealy—an accomplished pilot whose pursuit of precision in the cockpit is matched only by his pursuit of perfection on the greens.

We’ll take you through the process of the collaboration, the design, prototyping, testing and how we arrived at the finished product. Small Batch Miramar is a celebration of the process. It’s really hard to make putters for the best players in the world, but that’s what makes it fun.

PGA TOUR PRO

Maverick McNealy

First off, yes, these guys are good. And we’ve learned over years of working and designing products for the world’s best players that what they feel in equipment is in fact real. It may not show up in the CAD, it may not be explainable in the math, it may not ultimately even be what we see or feel. But when the best of the best give thoughts, feedback and suggestions, as product creators, our job is to quantify this into real world changes to improve performance. Often, our job is to look beyond what they say and to understand exactly what they mean. Often, the two can be quite different.

Working with Maverick has been a joy. Yes, he’s exacting. But why wouldn’t he be? He’s on a quest of continuous improvement, and as club designers and builders, so are we. We are totally aligned in the journey for better.

In designing Miramar, we listened to Maverick. He’s unique. He studied engineering at Stanford. He’s a pilot that flies his own plane. He’s thoughtful and he’s curious. In his journey for better, he’s willing to look beyond convention and try new things. And it’s perpetual.

Our relationship with Maverick started with a putter that we made for him over six years ago. It was a heel-shafted blade putter with significant toe hang and flow. Maverick loves to feel the putter head throughout his stroke and is very sensitive to slight differences. He has stayed away from heavier heads, instead preferring head weights in the 335-gram range. He enjoys the feedback and the awareness of where the head is throughout the stroke.

He’s not easy, because he’s never finished.

MISSION INTEL

He's very sensitive to sound and feel. If it’s not right to him – even by the smallest margins – he can tell right away.

Some of what he feels and hears can be attributed to the putter’s shape, the type of steel and the type and depth of mill pattern.

Finally, throughout the course of the season, these preferences can change. And when they do, in many cases, so must the putter.

Maverick has stayed in the same ball for quite some time. This has helped us to dial in the design to the performance package he prefers. Slight changes in the ball can lead to big changes in sound, feel and even ball speed.

WHAT DID HE WANT?

Maverick has asked us for a slightly different version of his trusty MM proto. He’s recently switched back to his Santa Monica that he used to win the RSM at Sea Island. He loves the feel of the 904L stainless and the firmer face mill with the ultra-fine double fly.

On his trusty, he loves the roll that he gets with Deep Diamond Mill. His curiosity lies with the firmer feel of the other putter and the look and design of his older MM proto.

With that in mind, we got to work. Our design goals were as follows:

  1.  Keep the weight and shape of his MM proto (Head weight about 335g)
  2. Keep face depth the same (his MM proto is a slightly shallower blade height. Maverick likes a shallower face because it allows him to hit up on his putts a little bit more comfortably, which he believes creates the truest roll and contributes to his success on bent and poa greens.)
  3. Make the top line a bit more crisp on the edges (tighten a few of the radii)
  4. Combine 904L stainless (his current trusty is 303 stainless) with a newer version of DDM to create a louder sound and firmer feel and maintain the forward roll of the original DDM.
  5. Dial in a shaft to create the stability and final feel adjustments.

THE HEAD

The head weight goal was a challenge for a few reasons. The material change to 904L meant we would be using a material that is a bit heavier than 303. An identical putter in 904L would be 6-7 grams too heavy. That means that if we were to keep the same blade length and depth (non-negotiable) we had to tweak a few other things. One thought was to make the face a bit thinner. Saving three or four grams would help hit the weight target but it would create a slightly different sound and feel. Not good. We opted to instead shave two grams here which was a small enough amount that we could dial in the difference with the face mill.

Next was to look at the shoulders and bumpers. There is a lot of opportunity to find weight here but Maverick’s eye is very sharp. If we remove too much weight by changing the height too much, he will notice the change at address. We needed to maintain the visual he prefers from that angle. We zeroed in on slightly tweaked bumpers and shoulders and found six grams that we needed to help us dial in the weight.

We’ve now found a total of eight grams, leaving us with two grams to play with.

That allowed us to shallow the depth of the DDM face mill just enough to help deliver the sound and feel that would be slightly firmer than his MM proto and better match his current Santa Monica.

The final tweak to the design was to dial in the stability and stroke feel of the putter head. That led us to a new shaft and design.

We ended up with a new shaft from our friends at Nippon. The 120-gram .355 tip design gave us a seamless blend from the shaft into Maverick’s unique hosel design. The shaft helped us create the look, sound, feel and stability that Maverick desired.

THE BODY

We love the shape of the Miramar head. It has several unique features. Most notable is the shallower face height. Maverick loves how it sits behind the ball. He’s especially fond of the sleekness of the look and the way the head seems to melt into the green. Finally, you’ll notice the top line is slightly flatter. This helps create what appears to be two lines that are perpendicular to the target line which is another design feature that Maverick likes.

THE REST OF THE PACKAGE

Maverick prefers the simplicity of the 904L to be finished in a raw silver satin mist finish. The gentle blast will protect against glare and give the putter a softer appearance. Maverick is also a pilot, so we really liked the look of the raw steel. It reminded us of the sleek look of the P-51 Mustang fighter plane.

We also love the Mustang inspiration as it pertains to Maverick’s family. Maverick’s grandfather spent many years working for American Motors Company and Mav’s father (who grew up in Detroit) named his sons after cars that were built in Detroit during his father’s time there. Maverick after Ford Maverick. Dakota, after the Dodge Dakota pickup truck. Scout, an International Harvester and Colt, after the Dodge Colt.

The Toulon family shares deep roots in the automotive world too and we love the connection we have to their family through both cars and golf.

THE DETAILS

On the sole of the putter, you’ll see the P-51 Mustang vintage vibe in full bloom. There are dots to resemble rivets and graphics to remind us of that iconic plane.

The face features our latest rendition of our Deep Diamond Mill pattern. Dialed in to a shallower depth, it’s designed to give a slightly firmer feel and crisper sound on the Miramar. The result is incredibly solid and satisfying.

Miramar features a new steel Nippon 120g shaft in a smaller tip diameter. This matches the lighter headweight perfectly delivering great feel and stability. Last, Miramar is covered up by a headcover inspired by a different famous maverick.
