SMALL BATCH CHARLOTTE

Charlotte, North Carolina is considered to be the “home of NASCAR” and is the central hub for the sport and home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Many of the sport’s teams and performance machine shops call Charlotte home. What’s the connection between milled putters and stock car racing?

The tolerances needed in racing to eke out every bit of performance is unbelievably intense. The slimmest margins can make the biggest difference in the pursuit of victory. The accumulation of tiny advancements lead to measurable improvements on the racetrack. Milling putters is very much the same way. When designing Small Batch Charlotte – like all the Small Batch creations that preceded it – we operate at the intersection of art and science. That’s the sweet spot for creating incredibly beautiful but also high-performing milled putters.

When creating Charlotte we wanted to stay true to the design DNA of the original B60 design, but we also wanted it to perform better than ever before. That requires an intense amount of engineering and an artistic blend of every nuance to make the putter beautiful but also sound and feel in a way this shape has never felt before.

The desire to create better performance drove us to the spirit of NASCAR, Charlotte.

THE HEAD

Charlotte is a design that we’ve loved for some time and began developing more than two years ago. It’s inspired by the legendary B60 – a putter used to win majors and tour events the world over and an overlooked design in the history of the game. Our mission was to develop our own look and feel while keeping as much of the original design DNA intact.

During the creation process we focused on the unique “B” flange design, but more significantly on its thickness. This area of the flange plays a major role in the creation of the putter’s sound and feel.  By thickening the flange we produce a deeper, more satisfying classic milled click. The sound is solid and simply pure.

We also designed the head to a weight of 355 grams, substantially heavier than the original. This allowed us to thicken the face and create the acoustics we sought. Coupling this with the use of our favorite material, 904L Stainless Steel, and our Ultra Fine Double Fly Cut face mill – the result is a putter with incredible sound and feel.

"the closer you look, the more complexities will emerge..."

Turning now to the shoulders, your eye will be attracted to the elegance of the flow from the top line to the back flange area. Looking more closely, you’ll see the beautiful, fine mill lines. Sculpted from 904L the final shape is clean and simple. But the closer you look, the more complexities will emerge. Our new Platinum Mist finish highlights the subtleties and brings a rare level of elegance to this classic.

Charlotte is a slightly longer and wider design than our other blades. These proportions are meticulously designed to create a visual harmony while maintaining the flowing organic shape that sets this putter apart from other blades.

THE FACE

The face mill pattern is a fine double fly cut with a small tuna over mill whose intent is similar to this project’s overall mission: pay homage to a legendary, beautiful, iconic shape without compromising on performance. The face mill creates a plush feel and a pleasing sound, and paired with our favorite stainless steel, 904L, perfectly marries artistry and performance.

THe sole

The sole celebrates the legend of the vaunted Daytona Superbird, a car so dominating with its superior aerodynamics in 1970 that it was effectively sidelined the next year, as rules changed to limit its advantages. The 904L is then slow-milled, leaving the micro mill marks under the engraved car graphic, and we added just a touch of racing red to paint fill the name Charlotte.

THE REST OF THE PACKAGE

Small Batch Charlotte is milled with our Ultra Fine Double Fly cut, yielding the audial and visual feedback we sought.

Charlotte is designed for the modern game, weighing in at a contemporary 355 grams. We’ve paired it with a special Toulon Pistol Midsize grip in a Candy Red color with our black stepless steel shaft.

The finish of our new Platinum Mist PVD over the incredibly high polished and slow milled 904L brings a finish depth without any glare. This new finish is simple but shows off the complex milling, particularly on the shoulders and bumpers.

The headcover is inspired by the many advertisements adorning iconic stock cars on the grid.

The Charlotte area is home to many machine shops dedicated to racing and discovering every bit of performance possible. This search for better is what drives us, and the dedication to the professionals in racing served as our inspiration.
