Famed golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie stepped on the Bon Tempe Meadow just north of San Francisco to create his first golf course in America.
– a tucked away gem known as Meadow Club. Dr. MacKenzie would famously go on to design other masterpieces including Augusta National and Cypress Point.
But Meadow Club is where it all began.
The golf course opened ten years prior to the Golden Gate Bridge, which meant to reach Meadow Club all those years ago required a ferry ride followed by a journey on horseback.
Over 100 years ago a special type of tree
Over 100 years ago a special type of tree – a madrone – had sprouted on the southwest slopes of a hill just adjacent to what would become Meadow Club’s fourth tee.
This special tree was deemed an environmental hazard in late 2022. When we heard the tree would need to be removed, we were saddened at the loss but intrigued on how it could be memorialized.
Through a special friendship
Tony and his close friend, master luthier and musician Jimmy Carbonetti, began working with the Club to acquire the madrone tree. If successful, the plan would be to ship the wood to New York and Jimmy would begin to work his craft – fashioning the madrone not only into handmade works of art that would become the putter’s sole plate, but also into a guitar from the same tree.
Hours were spent fabricating
Hours were spent fabricating the wood and finishing the madrone to its final shape. The madrone that stood for a century at Dr. Mackenzie’s first golf course in North America will live in perpetuity in the sole plates of Small Batch Meadow Club Carbonetti and in the guitar handcrafted by Jimmy.
The Putter
The putter head was designed by Sean and Tony Toulon – inspired by some of the mallet shaped putters that Dr. MacKenzie used who very famously believed that if a hole was designed properly it could be played with only a putter. This ear shaped mallet design features a sweeping front to back shoulder design that creates a generous cavity – making the Meadow Club putter exceedingly playable. The gentle and elegant flowing neck literally melts into the slightly rounded top line. The topline features a unique alignment aid – the famous stylized logo from the club itself.
The Face Pattern
The face pattern is a fine double fly cut mill pattern – designed to create a satisfying click at impact – and yielding a feel that is incredibly pure. The joy of great feel is something we strive to create in every putter we design and this creation delivers in spades. To complete the face milling process we added an artistic touch with a very fine overmill to create the special face pattern.
The Real Star
But the real star of the show is the sole plate, hand made by Jimmy Carbonetti. The master luthier-turned-obsessed golfer has made guitars for dozens of famous guitarists. This is his third collaboration with us and our most ambitious project yet.
Small Batch Carbonetti Meadow Club
We couldn’t be more excited to present the Small Batch Carbonetti Meadow Club creation the week of the Masters. It is a celebration of Dr. MacKenzie’s genius, the creation of a legendary golf course and the passion of our company, Jimmy Carbonetti and the membership of the Meadow Club.
Small Batch Carbonetti Meadow Club – a joyous collaboration bringing together a group of people connected through a shared love of the game.
